Hewlett Packard: Implementation of the Demming Cycle in toner after care service
Hewlett Packard has a fearsome reputation, not only for its business strategy, personnel management and operational effectiveness, but also in its overall approach to business. The Hewlett Packard’s corporate statement reads: “Objective: To our obligations to the society by an economic, intellectual and social asset to each nation and each community in which we operate honor.” With such a bold and comprehensive task, Hewlett Packard could be awarded if the minutia of daily service policy has been overlooked. Not so, Hewlett-Packard is due to the success of their attention on the quality of operations, products and services. In the 1990s, Hewlett Packard toner and ink cartridges Division was returned to a problem with the number of defective toner cartridges. There were about two thousand defective toner cartridges come every month, Hewlett Packard and the United Kingdom quality assurance department knew that the level of income are not in accordance with its erroneous sentence – there must be another reason for this anomaly. The Hewlett-Packard team decided to try a cause-effect or Ishikawa diagrams used to identify the cause of the problem. Three areas were identified: 1, some customers were not sure the proper procedure for changing the toner cartridge into the printer. Also meant a lack of technical knowledge that some customers were unable to deal with minor problems themselves, they lead to a failure in the toner cartridge to take. 2 Some traders were also lacking in technical expertise and were not able to provide customers with the level of support necessary to solve minor problems. 3, Hewlett-Packard had no quibble a right of return and it seemed that this was being abused. Empty toner and ink cartridges are sent for refilling, some of which are refilled up to five times. The quality of the toner, and methods for the cartridges was not up to the standards of Hewlett Packard and consistently mine, so to have an impact on the print quality and cartridge integrity. The team from Hewlett-Packard have reduced the use of the Demming cycle (Plan, Do, Check, Act – or PDCA), the number of the return of toner cartridges, a small fraction of the previous level. Some of the changes included strengthening the policy back to work with retailers to information and training on how to deal with small print problems and improving the information available to customers so that they are more about how to use the product have to do informed can.
