HP Laptop ZD7000 Review

16 December 2009 No Comment

Hewlett-Packard has a new powerful weapon in its Pavilion arsenal, the HP laptop zd7000, though it appears that tagging this device as a laptop is neither a suitable description nor an appropriate categorization. Considering its physical built and display, this particular HP laptop may be deemed as a stand-in for that bulky desktop computer gathering dust in your living room. With its 15.7-inch width, 10.9-inch depth, 1.9-inch height, and weighing in at 9.3 pounds, HP ZD7000 is indeed a desktop replacement.

With its sheer dimensions, it is but proper that this heavyweight packs in a whole lot of features. And like the other HP Pavilion notebooks, this one delivers as expected, more so in its multimedia quality. True to the characteristic of an HP Pavilion, zd7000 boasts crisp and clear sound thanks to the Harman/Kardon speaker system incorporated along the length of the front panel. The clear output creates an arrangement suited for auditory pleasure.

And for the ocular bliss, a fixed DVD-rewritable will provide accommodation for a majority of optical media which will then be shown in an imposing 17-inch display having a native or inherent resolution of 1440 by 900 pixels. Furthermore, these specs are supported by the first rate NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5600 graphics controller and a 128 megabyte RAM.

With regard networking, ZD7000 comes with a preinstalled 802.11g Wi-Fi radio making it possible to easily link the notebook to other gadgets and devices. Ports and slots are also present to provide an extension. It has 4 USB ports, an S-Video, a Firewall, Ethernet, infrared, fax/modem and a couple of PC Card slots, which can decipher SD/MMC, Memory Stick (MS), MS Pro, SmartMedia, and CompactFlash.

Running on an Intel Pentium 4 processor with hyper-threading, 40 gigabytes of hard drive storage, a maximum RAM of 2 gigabytes, and an entire keyboard (with a separate numeric pad), this is one powerful and uncluttered HP laptop. The touchpad is into the ‘wide’ theme as well. And its scroll down strip (not merely a line, a strip) deviates from the customary.

As for the cons, given the dimensions, ZD7000 is HEAVY. And probably that description is still an understatement taking into mind the past HP notebook models (as well as other notebooks available in the market). But to address this issue, HP installed two fans to hinder overheating. With that mentioned, these fans are not really the quiet type.

This heavy machinery is not really suited for long use seated in one’s lap. The power supply alone weighs almost 2 pounds. Unfortunately, battery size does not really equate to longer battery life. This specific model lasts for approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes. If your model reaches beyond the 2 hour mark, you are one lucky user. As for the rest of us, ZD7000 is a power-slurping machine.

If you are always on the go, this is not for you. If you are looking for a portable computer, this is not it. Though, personally, I think the weight of ZD7000 will make you stay put in one location (near the outlet), making battery life less of a worry.
